Faqeeran Waliyullah: The Sufi Saint of Perumathura

In the vicinity of Valiyappali Juma Masjid, the oldest mosque in Perumathura, lies the Maqbara (Dargah or tomb) of Faqeeran Waliyullah, a revered saint lived in the 19th century. His legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of Perumathura's history, and locals hold onto tales of his ascetic life and miraculous deeds with unwavering faith.

Faqeeran Waliyullah is remembered as a spiritual guide who, even beyond his mortal existence, is believed to have performed (karamats) miracles. His resting place draws believers seeking solace, prayers, and a connection to the divine. Interestingly, some of the fisherman told that they steer their boats close to the sea from where the minarets of Juma Masjid and his tomb is visible to embark their journey even they are going to a different direction. . Green flags adorning many of these boats are taken after tbeing blessed (taking barakath) from the maqbara. On Shahaban 15 of the Hijri Calendar, the Uroos or remembrance day of Faqeeran Waliyullah is observed with spiritual sessions and special programmes. Devotees gather to pay homage, reflecting the enduring impact of the saint's teachings on the community.

Local narratives intertwine miracles with Faqeeran Waliyullah's presence. The flagpole standing tall at his tomb tells a silent story—originating from a robust wooden log believed to have washed ashore, potentially from distant lands like Baghdad. Remarkably, it stands resilient against decay, embodying the enduring strength of faith. He is also said to have helped people to cross Muthalappozhi to reach the other end. Legend has it that Faqeeran Waliyullah played a role in the plantation of mangroves in the Kadinamkulam backwater, a testament to his benevolent influence on the natural landscape. Faqeeran Waliyullah's legacy lives on, not merely as a historical figure but as a source of inspiration, hope, and spiritual connection for the people of Perumathura.
