Day 02 : Connecting to the Village

After long conversations over phone and Whatsapp, I finally met Harris Ahsani who will be my primary field assistant here. He first took me to visit the Old Madrasa and Jama Masjid of Perumathura, narrating its legacy. We then ventured to the Muthalappozhi bridge where the sea converges with the backwater, to grasp the geographical landscape of Perumathura. Ahsani shared insights into the evolution of fishing, from large wooden boats in the past to today's machine motor boats. He recollected a time before bridges when the village seemed isolated, resembling a peninsula.

We went to the harbour, where we delved into the difficulties of the off-season, observed creatively named boats, and witnessed the collaborative efforts among youth for net repairs. These interactions painted a vivid picture of the challenges and cooperative spirit within the fishing community. Our exploration extended to observing the coir-making process at the eastern side of the village, revealing the division of labour. Men immersed themselves in the primary processes, creating net pits in backwaters and soaking coconut shields, while women diligently engaged in beating and tangling coir, showcasing a harmonious cooperative effort. Ahsani also threw light on social divisions, discrimination in marriage practices, coastal disparities, and clashes between different parts of the village.

The latter part of the day brought me to Govt. Lower Primary school, where I met with Sajid to discuss my role in Educare. I got a chance to read children's write-ups about their achievements, ambitions, and dreams. Later, I interacted with the students there. Their enthusiasm palpable, showcased the potential for meaningful engagement in the days ahead. Dinner, though late, was a satisfying affair with dosa, curries, and omelette. The day concluded with a reflection on the wealth of experiences, interactions, and insights gained, shaping my understanding of Perumathura's intricate tapestry. Sleep arrived late, accompanied by the lingering echoes of conversations and the anticipation of the days to come.
